here is my personal story about adam yauch. in 1995 when i was 18 yrs old and a fashion design major i invited adam yauch, mike diamond, and adam horowitz to my freshman year fashion show at pratt institute. my friend and i schemed a plan that she would get mca’s dad’s address from her fine arts teacher (mca’s dad was an architect professor at pratt at the time). so i made an invite that stated what a huge fan i was and that i was going to play “hey ladies” from paul’s boutique in my segment. we mailed it off to mca’s dad’s house addressed to adam yauch. none of the beastie boys came to my little college fashion show, but…a month later i got a call on the land line from my dorm room (no cell phones back then!), and i happened to be there to answer. it was mca’s pr girl calling to give me 2 free tickets and invites to the after party to their may 23rd concert at MSG! i took my friend at the time who was just as obsessed with the beastie boys as i was (and i mean OBSESSED) and it was one of the most memorable nights ever. i know a lot of people were huge fans of adam, but i have to say i think i was one of the top 10 fans haha. i will always remember that i grew up idolizing mca and he was one of my heros. it made moving from the comfy suburbs of chicago to the grit of clinton hill/fort greene brooklyn at the age of 17 easier knowing that was adam’s roots. RIP adam and i’ll make sure my little boy due in august is just as obsessed listening to licensed to ill, check your head and paul’s boutique as i was. you were an amazing person beyond your music.
